The recent pandemic outbreak that brought the entire world to its knees also highlighted a concept already a movement in several countries. The concept of homeschooling became a necessity during these unprecedented times. Parents were not comfortable sending their kids to local schools in these uncertain times and preferred online homeschooling over regular schooling. Today, the homeschooling concept is fast grabbing the attention of parents.  For the unversed, homeschooling is already a very progressive movement in different parts of the world. Homeschooling refers to parents educating their children at home instead of sending their kids to traditional schools. Although homeschooling can be challenging, the concept has several benefits that cannot be ignored. Look at what the parents are saying about their experience with homeschooling, its benefits and challenges.

Why is Homeschooling getting a lot of takers in India?

Parents homeschooling their kids strongly advocate this concept and talk about how homeschooling is bringing a paradigm shift in the education sector. They have valid reasons to back this concept and make other parents aware of the best way to educate their children instead of wasting time in a mindless rat race.

Pursue Their Interests

As per Sukriti, a parent based in Bangalore, homeschooling helped her daughter with more time on her hands to pursue her interest in coding. She was not getting enough focused guidance and time in institutionalised school to pursue her dream of becoming an expert coder. Homeschooling gave her time to pursue her academics and her interest in coding. She was happy to follow her heart and gain self-confidence in her abilities.

Greater Efficiency

Manas, a parent of a 10-year-old active boy, found homeschooling a better way to educate his kid because it made him more efficient. Earlier, his son wasted his time and was usually unable to complete his coursework on time. Homeschooling made him more efficient as he could save a lot of time that went into commuting to the school. Time thus saved was put to better use, and he could finish his tasks more efficiently.

Better Control on Study Schedules

Another benefit shared by a couple getting their two daughters homeschooled is that there is better control over daily schedules than when they used to visit a traditional school. Now, they pay as much attention to their education as they give to pursuing their interests. They have also noticed that their daughters studying in their home environment feel empowered by their freedom and make the most of it by controlling their daily schedules. The couple believes that homeschooled children make their own decisions about how much time they need to devote to their studies, interests, extracurricular activities, and more which makes them more confident.

A Flexible Curriculum

Akriti and Suyash, proud parents of a nine-year-old girl, Anya, were happy that their daughter has the freedom to follow a flexible curriculum. Initially, she was not happy with one workbook, so she switched to a new one even after a few months. This flexibility feature helped them and their daughter explore different curricula, workbooks, teaching approaches, etc. and choose the one that provided the best fit.

Children Set their Own pace

Himani, a 12 years old girl, found that pursuing Homeschool K-12 helped her set her own pace when it came to studies. Instead of being forced to study and complete coursework at an unnatural pace, she set her own pace and enjoyed her studies more than the children studying in institutionalised schools. She had the freedom to move to another subject if she was bored by the extra pages of practice. In other words, she was able to study a subject that challenged her intellect at a slower pace and take her time to understand it properly.

Children Understand the Significance of Family Unity

Manjula and Pawan were pleased that their homeschooled kids understood the concept of family unity better as they had the opportunity to learn and work together as a family. They found that online homeschooling strengthened the bonds with their kids and allowed them more quality time together.

Meet and Greet

The homeschooling concept is growing at a pace of 2%-8% per annum, and it registered an exponential rise during the pandemic times. The concern of the parents that their homeschooled kids may get disconnected from the mainstream was negated as many homeschools organise meet and greet for homeschooled children and give them an opportunity to mix.

Optimal Utilisation of Time

Ankita, a mom of a 12 years old boy Aarav found that her homeschooled kid was able to optimally utilise his time compared to kids studying in institutionalised schools. Aarav kept himself busy with his coursework and the multiple interests he developed when he started homeschooling.

Sense of Ownership

A group of parents homeschooling their kids accepted that they enjoy the sense of ownership they have towards the education and learning of their kids. They are more at ease knowing they are doing the best for their children and taking decisions in their best interests.

Striking a Balance

A study conducted on homeschooling in India found that kids who were being homeschooled could strike a perfect balance between their studies and extracurricular activities. If the kids were keen to pursue their interests, they were equally serious about academics. This helped them become a well-rounded individual.

All these reasons indicate why homeschooling is popular among parents who wish their kids to spend time in education, which helps them clear their concepts and strengthen their foundation. As a result, an increasing number of parents residing in metro cities are looking at homeschooling as the best way to ensure proper learning for their kids. The biggest gift a parent can give to their child is to find a way to prepare them for this rapidly evolving world.
